WELLNESS SPACE: Muttart Conservatory – Edmonton, Alberta

Have you ever stepped into a place and felt instantly transported? Nestled in the river valley of Edmonton, Alberta is a space that does just that – the Muttart Conservatory, one of Canada’s largest indoor botanical gardens. But, “the Muttart”, as locals call it, isn’t just a place to admire exotic plants.

As a wellness spaces consultant, I focus on environments that scientifically support mental and physical well-being, and the Muttart is a prime example of how nature and architecture can combine to foster both.

A Landmark of Beauty & Well-Being

Opened in 1976, the Muttart Conservatory was built to honor local philanthropists Merrill and Gladys Muttart. The iconic glass pyramids showcase more than 700 species of plants from around the world. I grew up in Edmonton and with family still there, I’ve visited this rejuvenating oasis several times. Each visit never fails to both relax and captivate!

Stepping into a Symphony of Color

Welcoming you in the warmer months is a color-drenched outdoor courtyard where you can enjoy breakfast, sandwiches, wraps, entrées, and desserts from their Café Bloom. Year-round outdoor dome seating is also available.

Journeying Through the Pyramids

Joined by a centre court are the four glass wonders, each with a distinct theme:

  1.  Temperate
  2.  Arid
  3.  Tropical
  4.  Feature

To enhance the educational experience, guided tours and educational programs are also on offer.

During my recent visit, I had the pleasure of my mother joining me – we share a penchant for anything floral! As we moved between pyramids (with me doing a second lap!), it was fascinating to observe how differently my mind and body reacted in each of the four environments.

1) Temperate Pyramid

Featuring plants that grow in climates with moderate temperatures, in the Temperate Pyramid, you’ll find eucalyptus trees and Australian pampas grass. Refreshing and rich in greenery, this glass sanctuary is where I feel most relaxed and contemplative – perhaps because it’s akin to the Canadian west coast where I’ve called home for many years.

2) Arid Pyramid

In contrast, the Arid Pyramid strikes me as a more meditative space, enveloping guests in a stark desert landscape of succulents and cacti. As I’ve long been fascinated by the Arizona landscape since visiting my grandfather – a Canadian snowbird – there during my youth, this pyramid never fails to mesmerize.

3) Tropical Pyramid

Housing colorful orchids, banana, and palm trees, as well as ferns, the relaxing, humid Tropical Pyramid features towering trees. Exploring in this pyramid transports me back to my sailings to a dozen different Caribbean islands while I worked short contracts onboard cruise ships spanning several years.

4) Feature Pyramid

Rounding out the quartet is the Feature Pyramid, where guests are treated to rotating exhibits throughout the year riffing on the seasons. During our visit at the end of September, we enjoyed chrysanthemums and…frog displays! The Muttart is a festive place to visit in December – a memorable touch to the season.

The Glass Icon’s Health Benefits

But, the restorative Muttart Conservatory not only fosters an appreciation for plant life and the environment, but it also enhances personal well-being. Here are some striking findings:

  • Stress Relief: A study showed how effective spending time in natural environments can be in lowering stress.

  • Improved Mood: A visit to green spaces can enhance mood, according to scientific evidence.

  • Enhanced Cognitive Function: Harvard researchers proved that nature contact improves brain function.

  • Better Sleep: Greenspace exposure has a positive influence on sleep according to this study.

For those seeking a more peaceful experience, at the time of writing, it’s adults only (18+ years old) on Wednesday evenings between 5 PM – 9 PM.

A Double-Duty Space

The Muttart Conservatory is a must-visit – it’s not only a space to enjoy vibrant beauty, but also to enhance your overall well-being – a combination that can’t be beat!
